Define relative age dating
Each original isotope, called the parent, gradually decays to form a new isotope, called the daughter.Each isotope is identified with what is called a ‘mass number’.
In other words, we can say that the age in relative dating is ascertained by witnessing the layers of deposition or the rocks.The relative dating is the technique to ascertain the age of the artifacts, rocks or even sites while comparing one from the other.In relative dating the exact age of the object is not known; the only thing which made clear using this is that which of the two artifacts is older.This is different to relative dating, which only puts geological events in time Most absolute dates for rocks are obtained with radiometric methods.These use radioactive minerals in rocks as geological clocks.For example, fission track dating measures the microscopic marks left in crystals by subatomic particles from decaying isotopes.
Another example is luminescence dating, which measures the energy from radioactive decay that is trapped inside nearby crystals.
When ‘parent’ uranium-238 decays, for example, it produces subatomic particles, energy and ‘daughter’ lead-206.
Isotopes are important to geologists because each radioactive element decays at a constant rate, which is unique to that element.
Relative Dating and Absolute Dating are two types of such techniques which are under practice to determine the age of the fossils, objects or civilizations.
The relative dating is the technique in the Geology through which the age is determined with relation to the other objects.
Because of the fairly fast decay rate of carbon-14, it can only be used on material up to about 60,000 years old.
